Speakers
Description
About the Seminar
Environmental health is a field of public health focusing on physical, chemical, biological, social, and psychosocial environmental factors impacting the environment and human health. Environmental public health interventions are implemented to control and prevent health hazards and promote health and well-being in the population.
Local public health units in Ontario are responsible for planning, delivering, managing, and evaluating public health programs and services such as healthy environments and safe water to ensure the needs of the population are met within the local context.
Consistent with the population health approach, public health programs and services place emphasis on the social determinants of health, healthy behaviours, healthy communities and population health assessment. This presentation aims to provide insight into the application of theory and research in environmental public health practice at the local level. By the end of this session you will be able to:
• Define how environment is a determinant of health
• Understand the difference between health equality and health equity
• Describe upstream and downstream environmental public health approaches
