Environmental Organizations
About the Organization
Beginning with her revolutionary research on chimpanzees, Dr. Jane Goodall has been a conservation icon for over 60 years. But she can’t do this work alone.
At the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada, we’re building a better, more sustainable world through community-centred conservation programs that support the intersection of animals, people, and the environment. We’re continuing the work that Jane started in Africa more than 60 years ago. And we’re bringing that work home to the 49th parallel.
JGI Canada is the Canadian Chapter of the global Jane Goodall Institute. Founded in 1977, the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) is a world-wide community-centred conservation organization that advances the vision and work of Dr. Jane Goodall in over 30 countries. It aims to understand chimpanzees and other wildlife and their habitats, and to empower people to be compassionate citizens dedicated to a more sustainable planet.
The Jane Goodall Institute of Canada brings this work home, and supports it abroad. In Canada, we support youth and Indigenous communities to implement projects that address the convergence of climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental inequity. In Africa, we support communities across chimpanzee ranges to enable conservation that protect these endangered species, while helping people to live sustainably.
About the Organization

With help from our volunteers and donors, Toronto Wildlife Centre has grown into Canada’s largest and busiest wildlife centre, and a leader in the field of wildlife rehabilitation.
About the Organization
For far too long the world has tried to lift others by providing resources, but resources can only go so far. At Cuso International, we believe in the long-term. Long-term partnerships. Long-term programs. Long-term results. We work on today's most important development issues by connecting marginalized groups with the skills they need to create lasting change. And we've been doing this for more than 60 years. How? Together with our partners, we are focused on efforts to advance gender equality and social inclusion, improve economic resilience, and deliver progress on climate action.

U of T Groups
About the Program
The School of the Environment is an innovative interdisciplinary unit within the Faculty of Arts & Science; it brings together and leverages the enormous breadth of environmental teaching and research expertise throughout the Faculty. The School fosters opportunities for interdisciplinary research and scholarship in environment, spanning the sciences, social sciences and humanities.
The School offers core programs in two areas: Environmental Science BSc Major and Minor, and Environment Studies BA Major and Minor. These programs are ideally suited to be taken in conjunction with another program(s) in a related academic field. These programs of study provide students with a powerful combination of disciplinary depth and interdisciplinary breadth.
The School collaborates with other disciplines to offer three collaborative Science Specialist programs: Environment & Health; Environmental Geosciences; and Environment & Toxicology. Other collaborative offerings include Major programs in Environment & Health, and Environmental Ethics, as well as collaborative Minor programs in Environmental Ethics, Energy & Environment, and Environment & Behaviour. These programs combine the School’s interdisciplinary core with a deliberately focused set of discipline-specific courses.
Administered by the School of the Environment, the Faculty of Arts & Science offers the Certificate in Sustainability as part of the U of T Sustainability Scholar initiative. The Certificate is designed to complement any Arts & Science degree or discipline. Participating students will develop a sustainability-lens based in systems-thinking that can be used to approach the rest of their academic program and career path.
About the Program
The School of the Environment offers two pathways for graduate studies at the University of Toronto; the Master of Environment and Sustainability (MES) program and the Collaborative Specializations. The MES is an intensive, 12-month research-stream program that responds to the growing need of society to understand and develop solutions to the environmental and human well-being challenges facing us in the 21st century. Upon graduation, MES graduates will have acquired a transdisciplinary perspective on environmental issues, learned to use methodologies and tools relevant to environmental protection and sustainability solutions, and will be well prepared for a variety of careers in the private and public sectors, or for further studies at the doctoral level. Our Collaborative Specializations in Environmental Studies and Environment and Health offer students enrolled in a graduate degree program elsewhere at the University of Toronto (U of T) the opportunity to specialize and explore an interdisciplinary area that complements their existing degree program.
About the Office
The Sustainability Office on the St. George campus is on an ongoing mission to embed sustainability into the fabric of University operations and the on-campus experience. We have many program offerings for students including work study positions, volunteering opportunities, events, and more!

U of T Student Groups
About the Group
The University of Toronto’s Environmental Resource Network (UTERN) is a levy organization that operates as a funding body and networking hub for any person, group or club within the university community interested in sustainability and environmentalism on campus. UTERN membership is open to all students, faculty, staff and alumni from any of the three campuses at the University of Toronto. To join our membership, join our http://utern.org/wp/mailing-list/.
To facilitate an environmental network at U of T, UTERN hosts monthly Environmental Working Groups (EWGs), where the environmental community at U of T and beyond can pool their resources, share knowledge, and keep up to date on environmental initiatives across the U of T campuses. There are also EWGs at UTM and UTSC. UTERN also organizes EcoFEST, a two week long environmental and sustainability awareness campaign, as well as works with other campus groups for Sustainability Week.
All full-time undergraduate students at UTSG, UTM, and UTSC as well as all full-time and part-time graduate students automatically pay the levy of $0.25/term, or $0.18/term for part-time to the student union. The levy supports student-led projects in relation to the environment for all of U of T, and is completely refundable for those unable, or unwilling, to pay.
For more information on our levy, funding history, constitution, EWG meeting minutes, etc., visit our website.
About the Group
The University of Toronto Environmental Action (UTEA) is made up of students from across the university who are working together for increased awareness of the environmental challenges that we all face. We are building a coalition of students representing every discipline on the St. George campus who are concerned with the state of our environment and the way it is being abused to the detriment of other species and future generations. No matter how you look at it, the world’s natural systems are under great stress, and as young people it’s imperative we begin to speak out and take action.
UTEA raises awareness about pressing environmental issues (e.g Indigenous water rights, sustainable energy, climate change, etc) and advocates for more effective government policies to address these issues at the federal, provincial, and municipal levels. The organization also works towards advocating for more sustainable campus policies at the University of Toronto. UTEA is unique in that it is a hub for innovative and interdisciplinary environmental research and sustainability advocacy solutions, and is open to all and any interested UofT students.
About the Group

About the workshop
Rootbound is a gripping young adult climate fantasy novel bursting with hope, heart, adventure, and mystery (think Greta Thunberg x Percy Jackson). Dr. Grace Nosek drew from her PhD research on climate misinformation + democracy and her postdoctoral research on inoculating youth against climate despair, in addition to almost a decade as a youth climate organizer, to write Rootbound. Come learn how to spot poisoned climate stories, take back our democracy from fossil fuel interests, and turn our joys and creativity into climate action!
About the workshop
Starting a Master's program can be stressful as students juggle coursework and program requirements, alongside their own career goals and projects. Approaches will vary from person to person, but this session will introduce time management and career development strategies that graduate students have found helpful. Drawing on research in time and project management, as well as testimonials from A&S graduate students, this session will offer tools for managing and for deciding which commitments to pursue throughout the Master's degree.
The Sustainability Office awards this event with a Platinum Sustainable Event certification.
